Peace Tree

The grand old Sycamore Tree that is often called the 'Peace Tree' was at one time the second largest Sycamore tree in the country.  Oral tradition supports that it was located on the boundary separating Indian Territory from the U.S. Territory, and was a trading area and meeting place for Indians and white fur traders to barter goods.  The tree was 400 - 500 years old and had been hit by lightning at least once when the area was flooded in 1969 creating Lake Red Rock - thus ending the life of the old tree.
Over the past decade we have seen the 'stump' remains of the tree grow smaller and smaller after each winter season.  This year is no exception and an inspection of the tree this past weekend showed that another section was no longer there. Someday we will tell our children and grandchildren that 'once upon a time there was a great Sycamore...'  Meanwhile we still pay homage and check on its 'survival'....and the Cormorants still love to spend their summers perched on its peak.

All we are saying is give Peace a Chance
